Nice work. Tough and strong. Certainly similarities with fallingjetengine's entry, particularly in the fender treatment, despite the different lightcatch and packaging.
Nice design and beautiful renderings, man. However, some of the stylng conventions like the fender shapes, lightcatch, and "clamshell" glass are pretty ubiquitous right now:
Amazing! The beast is alive and it looks incredible. Congrats to the Jay, Sangho, Dave, Mike, and the whole LM team. A personal shout out to Dale Beever, from me. GOD is in the sections. Proof positive. WORD to the revolution. Go Local Motors
Amazing work... inspiring to see the pics. Keep pushing till Vegas!
Very cool.. very futuristic. Not sure if it would survive packaging, but your concept presentation is nice!
This is good work. The DLO in your 3/4 view rendering is so small that it looks unrealistic even for a hot rod, but I dig the design overall.
I also think you're on to something here. Good proportions. I think the front end graphic (tiny grille sandwiched in a seam) is a little uncomfortable and puny-looking for such an imposing proportion, overall. Oh.. and THAT is a gigantic hood.
Sick roof feature... love it. Not as keen on the front and rear corner creases and graphics, but it's a great design overall. Cheers.
By the way, don't show potential girlfriends your Local Motors screen name, dude!
Some of your sketches are cooler than the final renders! GREAT evocation of your theme, though. I love the black and red graphics.
This is VERY cool, but you've got to justify that hood length. It could hold an engine and a pile of dead bodies, or contraband. What's the explanation?
Nice work. Evil and twisted in a good way. @jrogers: satisfies your vampire fix, eh?
Dude, where's your Chicago entry?? People are going to call you out for commenting but not competing!
MBW17 and fateh seem to disagree. I like the updated 30's styling and open front wheels, but I agree that the sketching needs plenty of work.
Super-cute car. Would be perfect for a female target market. You could probably make more passenger and cargo room in the package without changing the theme of the design very much... just make the rear more upright.
Really cool to see some manual sketching technique in a competition entry, but you gotta watch the perspective and wheel/tire-to-body proportions. Very gangsterized small car though! Cheers.
Nice original wheels dude... What's the thinking behind the bulging surfaces on the bodyside? Is there a thematic reason?
Nice proportion for a gangster retro ride. What kind of material would the pillars be?
Great work as usual. I like the high hoodline and it would probably be good for police-impact collisions as well... he he... Chunky surfacing still has good tension, it appears. Untouchable, perhaps.
I love the style in 20853, Aurel... such cool forms, really fun to look at. Glad you put up your render of the Alfa - Rad electrification!
Hmmm... now that I look more closely, I think this is the cleanest of all to "read". Definitely not as "bright" as the first option, but much easier to follow, IMO. I have to respectfully disagree with designova on the "big banner ad" idea. I would actually say that about number 1 with the trite "banner" hanging from the right corner and cheesy grids under the cars. However, I think both are excellent!
I like this and number seven A LOT. This seems a bit more commercial, "retail" whereas number seven seems more "technical" or "insider". I also like the longer stream of carchat in 7...
Hi - we're going for a combination of the two methods you mentioned, with a big emphasis on a "raw", machined look. We want to show the essence of the Rally Fighter, including the chassis and other engineering elements in the interior, without covering them up with a lot of plastic shapes. We would love to hear your thoughts on interiors - you and the community will hear more from LM Design regarding interior design opportunities soon!
Great to see this list. BMW motors make my mouth water, but I have to second Me2 on the Caddy cleandiesel V8 if it were available - 'Merican Power! And GM would probably LOVE the business right about now...
Great to see your sketches made into digital models. Really nice form and material transitions. The shapes, colors, and materials are very refined! What software did you use?
Cab forward BMW? A cool idea, but the opposite of BMW proportions. Really nice sketch work! The surfaces are all really easy to read - great lighting. Make them bigger so we can enjoy the sketches even more!
Great to see the continued development here.. I think for the Ducati brand, you may want to look closely at your modeling technique and adjust accordingly. The form language seems to be driven by skins and extrusions of sweeping curves. I would look at varying the tension in your lines, creating some long directional sweeps countered by some transitions to smaller surfaces with concavity. This indeed is quite close in package to my Citimoto concept of a year ago. I think the details could also play a major role in bringing your design toward the brand: the silver-colored elements in particular don't look very "Ducati" to me. Overall, I'm really impressed with the level of work and detail you've put into this project, and it's looking better with every step. Bravo!
Impressive renderings, as always, with a good feel for vehicle trend and atmosphere. Nice to see a project taken this far, over so long. Also great that it provoked such a good debate on design and technique in the community.
Another really unique from from you, Palethorpe. Very complete project, as Aurel said.
Agreed with Filski - cool form, but the graphics seem a little bit arbitrary.
Agreed... nice way to integrate some feasibility consideratons. With some matte black pieces, you could probably even integrate more wheel coverage and still have the same overall feel to the design. Bravo.
Nice work. I would like to see some free ideation sketching and package development work for this project, but the final renderings look GOOD!
Iconic, American. Looks like a rod, but modern. Exposed wheels aren't the most practical, but it would become a Boston mascot almost.
Great "moody" feeling to this render! How long did this take??? Reminds me of film noir...
New sketches born lately? I've been listening to lots of Wu Tang and Nas Illmatic lately - word up to the true hip hop, son.
Latest sketch is so sick, so simple. Also, your Alfa is one of my all-time favorite prisma sketches. Sketch is born, son.
Really cool to have a figure in the composition for scale and "life". Very cool form interplay.
Jonathan, Thanks for the words you wrote. Really appreciate your involvement on the RF project and throughout the community. I've been really busy as well, so your presence on LM has been especially valuable. What kinds of design projects are you working on?
Also LR's Lancia has some similar geometry... not on his profile anymore, tho!
Bulldog - small and tough. Great work on the surfaces... exposed wheels cause problems, but they look great! Mihai = amazing.
Interesting modeling technique... Is this a curve-based technique or are you creating planar surfaces, then pulling them into shape?
SICK red chrome eggplant. Where else but Zero2Endless can you find a burger with CHROME cheese? Can't even call it cheesy - it's like the C1000 liquid metal composite terminator Velveeta from the future. Get down!
Couldn't agree more with hnut's comment. Additionally, I wanted to applaud you for your presentation quality. Even though you're design is very "simple" (which is the point, of course) you really bring it across with all of the attention to detail in your presentation images. The "tiled" images and clear layouts really work in your favor.
LOVE the render and the design... really sweet work. Curious to hear what your process between 3D modeling and phtoshop rendering was like on this one... very good "feel". Only criticism would be that the fender surfaces on the front wheels look like they are "holding back" the front wheels gesturally rather than accelerating the vehicle forward. Perhaps those fenders could start a bit lower/behind the front wheels and release over the wheel? This looks like a "complete" design, though. Great work!
@designova: wish this design did honor to that comment! Thanks for the shout, man... I'll post up some more adventurous shiz in checkup next. Gina's dope, eh? And it's 7 years old or something... they just kept it undercover. Makes me wonder what kind of stuff they're cookin' up now!
maybe you could bring some of the exciting forms from the front view sketch into your side view? I'd also love to see a tip up view with sections, to analyze the design a bit more. Nice classic coupe proportions, though!
This is a really cool sketch! I don't think you need the "fuzz" coming out of the wheels, though - the car is cool enough already!
Love your sketches, but the design in this one is more awkward than your other sketches. Could be that it's just hard to read the surfaces, but it looks like a WWII military vehicle - cool, but nostalgic...
Great work, really unique digital painting style! Feels "electrified". Rad.
Nice manual render. Really appreciate the classic techniques when I see them now. Two suggestions: think about using a different hue to show the top/front of the vehicle as it turns away from the side, indicating a different light source or skytone. 2) The fender shapes on this vehicle are aren't very integrated into the rest of the body, which is overall a very nice combination of form and graphics. Nice work.
True sketch and render master! I love the way #403 bends space... amazing. What's new??
Did some side view sketching from the 3/4 view... Hey LM Web team: is there a way to make the latest sketch in a checkup the thumbnail for it, and change the "About this" text?
Hi - first off, am I looking at an Aston Martin or a Fisker Automotive concept here? A bit confusing that you seem to be cross-referencing the recent career trajectory of our white-besuited icon Henrique. My two preliminary critiques would be that you should focus on showing A) Perspective (some convergence in your orthogonals) and B) section lines in your initial sketches. I would be particularly interested in the front wheel center section, over the hood. Watch out also for your ellispes (front could be just a bit wider degree, back just about right). I have a few thoughts on the styling but those will have to wait till later. Love the Tangerine Dream color scheme. TD is a sick band, by the way.
Have to agree on not swapping cash for Lex, but I also have to admit that they're getting better, fast...
Nemo - thanks for the suggestion! It's been a while since I looked at the citimoto project and now I'm stoked on it again.. Expect something in a few days...
Cool... would the truckbed have a specific Bostonian use in the inner city? I like the colors in the design on the left a lot... maybe you could try eliminating black from the body of the vehicle - would show off your surface development more.
I like numbers 1, 7, and 8... really cool to see all the variations. Good way to use the LM community to your advantage! Smart.
Hey man, it's been a while since you've posted up your work... hope to see more!
Nice impression of the car on a rainy street at night... love the way the front glass "flows" down to the hood area. Tough "chin" on this one, maybe a bit too much of a frowning face. But tough for a small car. What's the justification for the tent-like roof/stitching?
I like your mix between aggressive automotive forms and more "pod-racer" styling on the front wheel ferrings! As usual, I also really enjoy your Prisma sketch technique and form development.
The profile of your Chevelle peaks at the top of the (very big) windshield.. you might want to look at that feature. Also, very big a-pillar, relative to the rest of the features.
Beautiful work - I love it when you combine your hand-sketching with digital on the same page. The designer's art.
Nice proportions and simple, elegant forms on your Peugeot. This concept reminds me of the Renault Ondelios concept in the Paris show - continuous glass and body surfaces, good resolution. Rear Lighting isn't my cup of tea - looks a bit like the Mercedes SLR. Great digital model!
Very nice... looks like this sketch has a longer hood than your original design, and @braunarsch, a higher rear. Once again, good job on the rendering of the silver paint color - it's hard to do! Try another unique view of this car, to continue to nail down the design...
Rear views are tough, especially on really curvaceous cars! This slight perspective view looks cool, though. Good silver paint job, too! Included Thomas Smith's sketch - conventional proportions, excellent technique.
Cool to see your digital and manual techniques... really strong work. Bravo!
Cool to see how you're using your inspiration images in your styling. How can you incorporate those influences into the function of the car?
Tyler, good work on your sketching development! I would caution you, however, against posting chop-jobs as your own work in your portfolio. (i.e. the Rally Fighter) Really like your lighting ideas, though... Cheers.
Great work, man. Keep up the practice, keep learning about everything you can (it all helps your car designs). Cheers!
Was just praising the new Pininfarina concept to high heaven... glad to see it here. Such an elegant small car with subtle features, especially the beautiful bodyside bulge into the taillight graphic. Cheers.
I'm really excited to see you develop this design! Here is the B&W Lambo concept from E. Tsarukian: Totally different brand and form language, but I think his execution on the front & rear is good...
Great black & white digital sketching technique. I think you can be much, much more radical with the forms and graphics. The Pantera was a gorgeous, brutal car when it first hit the streets. I see an identical proportion and very similar window graphics, with updated front and rear graphic openings. I also would like to see variations on the bodyside section. The contrast of the black graphic break with the downward tilt of the (very low) shoulder break make the car appear big in the rear, but very fragile at the rear door cut line, as if it is sagging under weight and about to break. That line also reminds me of the Dodge Challenger. Check Ernest Tsarukian's Lamborghini concept for some similar inspiration on front and rear graphics. GREAT concept with the removable body for a race application. Very cool project - beautiful sketches!
@Eclips: I agree that it's tough to make a mid-engine sedan work from a packaging and proportional standpoint... this is a cool styling study, though. LR and I both like the geometric form language... cool quick sketch.
thx for the encouragement... I'm developing some ideas about contrast that I've been percolating for too long. Time to drop the bomb. Thx for the comments!
Cliff, great to "see" you here in our studio. Your expertise and knowledge inspire myself and other designers to work hard and go for our dreams. Looking forward to seeing more sketches! What about that sweet transport vehicle??
@Sciocont: Way to help, man. The form development and technical skills here are good, whatever you think of the design.
You are on your way to being a star, man... I remember your pencil sketches from earlier competitions - The transition from analog to digital can take time, but your work is looking great.
Huge front glass might make the driver feel very "exposed" in a tough city like New York. I love the way you used your inspiration, though. Your car would make a great NYC taxi, it's true...
I like everything about this design except the "face" doesn't seem as developed as the side view. Very nice.
This has a very fun personality - reminds me of Asian toy culture. This one could be an automotive version of a Killer Whale, but really nice! Good combination of digital and analog sketching...
Excellent.. love the "sliced" body surfaces, wrapping around the shell. Makes me want some pasta.. a nice egg fettucini perhaps! Outboard wheels are nice for a concept, but don't maximize floor space in plan view... something to think about. Great work!
Beautiful sketches: you and Max Shershnev are all over the watercolor styles. I love it. Great vehicle "character" in the trucks.
Beautiful page of sketches. I remember your progress in photoshop rendering from cardesignnews, so it's great to see you here, In The Studio!
Great sketches with super clear proportions and surfaces... I'm so impressed. You've mastered the Russian/Kostromin technique! Magnifique.
Great overlay variations. I love looking at your decision-making process and perspective technique. This is what car design is all about...
NICE work... love the exposed mecanicals and "wing" shapes beside the cockpit. Doesn't get much more F-22 Raptor than this - cool how you managed to get a "jet fighter" look with a rear cabin configuration. Looks like an angular F-1 car almost... neo-Batmobile...
Really nice work! Reminds me of F-86 Sabres, MiG-15s, and P-51 Mustangs... Cool graphics.
Great entertainment design work. Maybe we'll see you soon in Los Angeles...
Coolest wheel cover I've seen in a long time... Bigger rear wheel! Cool sketch! Tipup?
Tipup view drops the bomb. Plan view action is where it's at for this vehicle. Rad.
I really like your project! Great combination of quick sketching and modeling. Nice balance between miltary "face" and fast, jet-like surfaces. I don't understand what the clear panels on either side of the cockpit do, though...
Really nice front fender & face modeling on the Audi... that takes skills.
yeh man, cheers for the "Featured Design" spot! I like the physical model much more than the virtual - great work on that!
I like everything about your audi cabriolet except the vertical logo within the raised circular bulge feature. I like the idea a lot - but not with the form language of this vehicle! Nice sketch - nomination from me.
I appreciate the section lines on the top left sketch. some vents or body sculpture on the "shoulders" of the vehicle could help to promote the idea of "wings" coming out from the fuselage. Nice value sketching, but your "border" does not help your presentation, in my opinion...
I like the bigger "eyes" and other subtle refinements relative to iteration 21! Sweet, sweet rendering!
I'm not sure about the fender shape... looks a little truck-like to me. Maybe appropriate because it's an off-road rally-style vehicle, but round openings would look more "sports." Also want to see more refinement on the "face" of the vehicle.
This reminds me of the aero-inspired German speed vehicles from the 1940's or so.. very cool & aero-looking. maybe even more taper into a "teardrop" shape at the rear, to counter the big vertical fin!
The top tip-up sketch is a great illustration of your theme (bird) form language. Very clear to see your inspiration coming through. A suggestion: in your rendering technique, the black outlines at the edges of your forms are distracting. Try using only value difference to define your surfaces and only apply linework last or not at all. Great page of sketches!
Orthographic-style drawings always make me do a double take, especially when they're not tape. It's strange to see a sketch not in perspective, even a side view. But that's what it takes to package a vehicle...
Great name for the project & very nice style of presentation. Reminds me of a dossier of confidential government images!
Really nice work. I agree with braunarsch that the side view could be a bit more dynamic, but I really admire the mix of digital & analog, sketch & render techniques. Have a great time in Japan - I've always wanted to go there!
Nice use of the inspiration without getting too literal... I love the canopy shape, etc. Always helps me to sketch out the inspiration and I can see that it really worked here...
I really like the front end of your VW concept... body side looks a bit BMW to me. Would love to see some more exploration! Some site members have done great VWs that I look at for inspiration: LR and Ugo in particular...
Love the side engine concept! The shape of the exhaust headers is a key element in the design now, so maybe some variations could be useful? Nice modeling work!
Love seeing your sketch development process here in this thread... hopefully we'll be able to link checkup "threads" to competition entries soon, so the community can see all the early work! Think about the character of your front wheel center section line...
Really nice project development within this thread. I like the way you're showing the vehicle from different angles, focusing on different features. Very nice. I encourage you to learn/use the path tool on photoshop or simply to erase away hard edges with the a hard eraser tool... get just a little more Krispy...
damn.. major Area 51 influence on the color schemes!
Um... I'd like some lime in my gin & tonic please..
Thanks guys! I use copic for greyscale marker sketching and both Copics and AD markers for color. Love the Xylene feeling.. Most sketches here take 1-3 hours. Some took a bit longer, when I was less experienced.
ACCD represent. Nobody else but K could pull off tangerine slice surfacing. WORD.
Nice quick marker sketch technique! This vehicle looks a little "short" for a BMW, but I like where you're going with this...
Your Bugatti shows a great understanding of automotive form language. The shapes look "real!" Thx for the comment on my work!
Thx Suz... means a lot to hear you say that, especially since you know the American muscle form language backward & forward!
NICE photoshop technique on this neo-rod... great vibe. Looks like it's tearing up a velvet room, in reverse gear!
Mostly marker with a little photoshop later.. Most of the sketches are 12-20" wide. A couple, like the Lamborghinis, BMW, and MasterRatty, are 50" wide, marker.
Too musclecar - agreed! Big KC front lights should be added later, after the styling is complete!
I really like your work on this sketch, deuxfov... I'm integrating some of your ideas about lines with the long-hood proportion already. We need to talk about the section on the hood and fenders, front and rear...
Love the idea of a "hollow" area in a composite body/frame vehicle, allowing people to see "into" the car. Sick. Not sure if there are radial engines in production now, though!
Word up to the marker and chalk technique on the Bel Air! Thx for your comments, man - inspires me to keep pushing!
@fogarasi: nice comment - beat me to that example! Brianm - love racecars with a classic "missile" shape, so I'm really stoked about this direction...
Like "LM Design" said: see you in the fall. Looks like you're having fun at ACCD- Thx for the comment!
I like the direction you're taking this! Good proportions and mix of hard theoretical edges and some smooth modeling. The blue "swoosh" in this sketch make the car look like it's doing a reverse burnout!
The cab-forward seating position and "slit" openings on the body remind me of the Boeing Bird of Prey stealth concept.. Check out the amazing mix of hard edges and smooth curves:
Somehow I don't think LM design intended to specify actual wheel and tire sizes with this sketch...
the proportion of this vehicle troubles me a bit... looks a bit long and static for my taste. Also, the treatment of the white body "hanging" over the wheels makes the whole vehicle look "heavy". That said, I think Mercedes should hire you immediately because this "look" is a HUGE improvement!
very cool sketch technique with great shading... However, I think you could "push" the surfaces of this sketch even more! Pretty typical bodyside and "face" but it all looks good!
Still waiting for you, zeekilla! Does your company bar you from hangin' out with us on Local Motors? You're probably really busy, naturally... Where's the next course? The prawns were tasty!
Of course that's not a sliding door! It's the Audi logo graphic. Interesting "flat" bodyside approach, with the negative curvature on the shoulder. I think light would look amazing on that surface... as you have shown with the turquoise paint on your sketch. Cheers!
Lookin' good! Two suggestions: Add a "hotspot" to show exactly where your lightsource shines brightest (in this case, it would be just behind the front fender). Throw some section lines over the wheel centers and bodyside of the vehicle to show how the surfaces work... This is a really refined design and I like it a lot!
I really like the "flow" of lines you develop in your work. The next step would be to put some section lines over key areas of your sketches, like the wheel centers and center body side, to see exactly what the form is doing... Your sketch technique is great - now it's time to start thinking of your designs as "sculpture"!
Dodge should have made your charger instead of their Challenger, in my opinion! Would love to see you try your hand at sketching to create some original designs!
All I have to say is OHHHHH YEAH! I am such a big fan of sketching cars with a watercolor technique.
@dshed: I'm thinking seething, frothing dog on the attack! Really nice work, DEMIR.
@kewlrats: I'm with you on the top left dev. sketch! I wouldn't mind seeing some of that proportion/surfacing brought into the final renders...
Koen: have you considered doing a bit more school in car design? You're really, really talented and I have great respect for the automotive feeling in your work.
Hmmm.... long hood... cab rear... classic American... sounds good to me. Reminds me a bit of the basic "La Vida" proportions, actually....
Thanks, man! I might just need that alias advice for my gradshow modeling, coming soon. I'll be keeping an eye on your work too - great stuff!
RAD. Sweet to see your design evolve. I also prefer this vehicle without the stripes!
Yes! I agree with redishman that this is a major improvement in proportions, but you kept the nice styling. Changed my vote!
This seems to be a Dodge Charger/Challenger proportion with some similar bodyside development to the late 50's vettes... very American. Don't think I've ever seen quite this much "negative" curvature in a bodyside! Rear fender seems a bit simplistic to me, though - very even curvature all the way around. GREAT modeling work, though, to accomplish all this in 3D.
Really like the overall form language here, esp. the nice fender work, front and rear. However, the rear overhang is WAY too long for my taste & the renderings make the car look like plastic. That said, this is excellent design work - also like the window graphic shapes!
I can't really tell a lot about the surfacing of this vehicle from the above sketches, but from what I can see, it's hot. Some different views would be great, to get a better feel for the design. I really like the thin pillars, though - hard to achieve but very elegant!
Matt - you're setting the scene for a wild party after summer term with this project: I hope you'll be arriving in the Echelon!
Very much has a Jaguar form language - watch out that it doesn't "sag" in the middle of the bodyside.... really nice linework on your sketches!
First off: amazing model, amazing design. Second: The front fender/shoulder transition is so cool and so well-executed, and the lower opening on the body is great as well.... but the two together seem to take away a bit of "strength" from the bodyside. Agree with kewlrats that the convertible is dope. Overall a really impressive design - something for me to aspire to in modeling & form development!
@eh4life: very cool that you did a quick sketchmod on this one... read my mind on some of your thoughts! I think that the rear fender should apex further back, over the rear wheel center, to be really picky! @Kotlyarevsky: really nice work on your two 3/4 views. You show form so well that these look almost like studio shots. Wow.
@kewlrats: right on... Haleewood: looks like you're ready to break into shades of gray on your renderings - the black and white isn't describing the form language of your vehicle.... I really like that you included an interior rendering! Keep that up and you'll get a job as a car designer!
Rad grille idea - I saw something similar on a saturn grille, but I definitely prefer the LM logo!
@Kotlyarevsky: gotta agree with you on the "tiny cabin" part - would be interesting to see the changes necessary to package the car for real occupants, even with a porsche-style back seat! @deuxfov: Would love to see some front end variations if you have time! Still wonder about the spoiler...
Very cool rear end with crazy exhaust ventricle... awesome under-car shot, too! Rear view mirrors look like "wings". "Bumper" sections around wheel look a little slab-sided and chunky from here!
Cool painting! Watch that "snout" on the front end.. think about how to make this vehicle appear wider and more muscular... That aside, your painting skills are outrageous!
Excellent market placement - shows some really strong research! Car looks a little different in every sketch. My favorite is the first side view, color excepted. Perfectly flat bodyside (5th & 7th pages) could provide interesting reflection as owner staggers out of the club... or does this vehicle have a matte finish?
I think those ladies may, in fact, be represented in the project!
Surfaces of this one look alright to me, but the cabin doesn't quite capture the "fighter" theme, imo! I also didn't add the slice/wing/vent in the bodyside, and now that I see it on yours, deuxfov, it looks SICK!
There's a bit of a Local Motors grille theme developing in the Miami entries with two prominent radiator grilles on either side with a clean area in the middle... Very nice work.
GREAT work on the front/rear end styling/face of this vehicle. Looks really angry and unique. Reminded me of the Chevy WTCC ultra concept from a couple years back. Also check out candyrod's Miami Slider concept - you guys both have a great feel for car design emotion!
@kewlrats: totally agreed on the roller coaster idea - been meaning to mention that on this page for days!
@Jay Rogers: LoL... and more LoL. Candy catacombs? Techno equalizer dj booth? Definitely space for dogs in the back seat.
Your contest entry has great proportions... did you do the character sketches? I would love to see some portfolio work!
Once again, great sketches! What is the god-statue-figure in the bottom corner of your last image!
Cool combination of influences: beach cruiser/musclecar. It almost looks like it could go on the sand! Nice details like the turquoise wheels, gridded rear window, and fantastic package drawing. You really feel the muscles!
I really admire how far you took this design. If this was simply a sketch, or a "study model" it would never be taken seriously, but because you took the time to add all the details and refine the design, it's worthy of serious consideration! Certainly a car for the iPod generation. I look forward to seeing much more of your work and ideas in the future!
Oh yeah... I love your shape/surface analysis sketches in the top image. That's so great to "see" your thinking...
Beautiful car, Lude... I feel there's a tremendous Alfa Romeo influence here, from the fenders and bodyside to the headlight graphics. The side window graphic/b-pillar area looks a little unrefined, but the overall shape is great. Neo Fulvia/GTV - two of my all-time favorite cars.
Sweet design work here... GREAT presentation images and composition. I think this vehicle strikes a very "Dracula GT" note, not Miami. I imagine it racing through the forests of Transylvania with Dracula and some girl, back to the castle!
Vling's right on here, this design is "easy on the eyes" because of the great proportions. Not a risky design, but very very nice. I don't like the graphics and details, but it doesn't matter because the overall proportions are very nice. A bit more work on the shape of the headlight/grille area would do wonders, in my opinion.
Really contemporary, "right now in car design" vision. Great color choice and sketches, perfect "tone" for the whole project. I definitely want this car, but I'm not sure if it works as a 2+2! Crockett might be a good name. Or just "Vice" !!!
This vehicle is exciting and unique! Absolutely stunning work on your final two renderings - they set the perfect tone for your vehicle and raise the standard of the entire competition. I'm not 100% on the spoiler or the hood-to-rear view mirror feature, or grill, but the overall "feel" of the design is exceptional. This is special.
Superb "faces" on the front and rear of this vehicle! I don't see as much unique character in the side and 3/4 views. Great design work... good luck in Germany!
Classic, American, sexy styling. I see some beautiful influence from the AC Cobra in here, with a more refined Miami/European feeling as well. Great vehicle proportion in the side view. I really appreciate the quadrant maps you included on your styling and marketing analysis.
Cheers to you for taking a risk with the rear wheel treatment on this car! I think it makes the vehicle look a bit too feminine (pulled-up miniskirt?) and a little uncomfortable. The rear wheel is so unique, yet the front and midsection of this vehicle remind me very much of Sasha's Ferrari on his blog, particularly in the front fender treatment. Great, exciting, risky work.
Excellent storytelling and rendering artwork. I'm impressed and humbled by the level of detailed research and thought you put into this work. I love the F-86, the Cuban-American influence, and amazing locations in your renderings. I can't say that I love the design of the vehicle as much, but the overall quality is superb.
Great surface ideation on your sketch page! Musclecar vehicle proportion reminds me of some other competition entries like the "Fastline" and "Kuda", etc... I think this vehicle could use just a bit more dash-to-axle distance to show the power of a huge engine under the hood!
Great artwork here. Fantastic Miami colors and "club" vibe... The renderings are visually amazing.
@Ugo... I've seen the "glass sheet" idea before as well. However, I wouldn't say that Marc Kirsh or anyone in particular "owns" the idea. Marek: good work! Maybe you could sketch some wheels that integrate the transparency theme? Your current wheels look really "standard"
I still haven't recovered my sanity completely from pulling carpet from, scraping glue from, stripping, painting, and sealing my family business' 4,350 sq. ft. retail space... Xylene is my friend. Muriatic acid is even better!
Rear decklid is a really cool feature and an original way to integrate the central brake light. Great job on the front end graphics, but the surfaces look a bit "flat" too me, especially the fenders. Great work!
Fantastic work. You really feel the "life" and "personality" in car shapes and it shows in your sketches. If you were to translate this design into a package drawing (with feasibility in mind) and keep the spirit, I think you will have an excellent car!
SICK next gen hotrods... You could work with WiKID (engineering guru) on vehicle packaging and feasibility and LM could potentially build one of these! Which one is ur favorite?
wanted to include Them Jeans' Kinfolk Kia Shine Krispy remix with Jan Hammer's Crockett's theme (Miami Vice soundtrack), but the link's expired. Here's some Baltimore club-style Krispiness: http://www.zshare.net/audio/3234955f469978/
Cool Lotus.. I would like to see the sketch style you used in the first bmw/exa page in more of your work!
I'm guessing that Crisp is shooting for theoretical edges, which would ultimately be made into production radii in an engineering phase... gotta love the crispness in the design stage, homeboy!
definitely the top one: when you see it as a "face", it just looks badass - really storm trooper! However, I would reconsider having such a strong break/crease down the middle of the rear... maybe a central "eyebrow" surface? Nice Graphic work... lots of triangles!
Nice shape on your fender arches & chunky A-pillar... big improvements over Iteration 2! Also like the assymmetrical hood scoops and grille - maybe that's a future Local Motors brand fascia? Great to get some fast feedback, ME2.
Superb physical model. Your digital renderings look a little toy-like and plastic, but the real thing is sweet. More intense colors work better, as well.
Whoa... major improvements on this version. Really inspiring to see a design develop so much from initial ideation sketches to a more complete design.
Whoa... that's some "mountain range" bodyside surfacing... You should explore the way the exposed frame integrates with the body panels. Replaceable panels could be very useful in the event of a rhino attack!
I like the neo-rod direction that you're heading... you could emphasize the "hand-crafted" or "mechanical vs. sleek" ideas in this design even more by exposing a welded steel frame behind the body panels... Sketch tip: make your wheel ellipses a LOT wider and your sketch will instantly be in better perspective!
Dude! what are you using to model this? Crazy surface bulges and sweet f-5E Tiger in the background.... watch out for the dash-to-axle ratio - looks a little short here...
I really like the first version of the rocker panel better... agreed with jrock on the new fin! This design is such a super coupe!
Next-level mid-engined supercar from Arif! I love the rocker panel surface on the body side and the way the front air dam graphic makes the "nose" so high, like a shark! Not as keen on how the "a-pillar" area breaks over the glass, potentially affecting visibility. GREAT work.
Mega elegant nautical influence on your Maserati model. Beautiful surfaces & volumes - highly unconventional details. Neptune drives this car!
I really like the coupe proportions of the vehicle and the front fender has a REALLY nice character. However, there are a few things I want to point out about this design: The shoulder crease looks like it "sags" or "breaks" in the door area. The A-pillar "pushes" down on the shoulder and the rocker, making them appear too weak to hold the mass of the car up. Fender-mounted mirrors are really cool!
Bravo to the amazing Ferraris & 70's inspired cars on your blog, too.
Great Mazda sketch - rear view is a nice combination of precision and painterly lighting effects. I love cars that "turn under" at the bottom... Cheers.
Thx for the comment... I'm honored, man. I could never come up with sophisticated presentation like urs, dude... I always take note of your comments on this site... great design advice. Take care in your travels & hope to "see" u around!
Like the massive grille openings on the sides, combined with headlight graphics/color/material breakup. Simplicity in the front/middle. Reminds me of elegant yacht decks... Also takes car design forward from the current "big grille in the middle" theme. Cheers, Aurel!
Really nice sketch/painting! Way to show surfaces with value... I would love to know how you did this!! Painter?
N - looks like you got busy with a palette knife on those Ford sketches. Incredible mix of resolution/freedom/proportion on the Alfa. A benchmark.
Really nice work on your model! However, I would STRONGLY caution you against putting up your copies of other designers' sketches as your own work, as in your page "Automotive Sketches." Good luck and all the best!
Really good value sketching technique on the mid-engine concept. I'll check it out as reference! NICE.
ACCD represent, man. Just wanted to shout out at ye. Hope you're doing well!
Excellent value sketching technique.... Thanks to Filski's comment for turning my eye to this work. I would really like to see more, and get some comments from Zeekilla...
Thx 4 the comments & suggestions, guys! jrogers: U r right on - slammed the roof a little too much on this sketch... need to do a black render with crazy fog light action. WiKID: I'll look into that concept. There's a huge space out there for a quality sports/offroad design... I'll keep working on this!
nominated front view of your VW to the design wall. Sick rendering. Looks like a beautiful day to go surfing.
love the "coffee splatter" sketch! Way to use that spilled latte for beautiful design!
Nice chartreuse Fiat model... hard to see the character of the bodyside without reflections, but I like the idea!
Really cool shot... just searched through the Checkup "archives" a bit and saw this...
Would like to see another "version" of this sketch, including a few more views... Right now, it's easy to see the basic proportions, but impossible to see a "car" with surfaces in this sketch. Some section lines would also help! Nice line technique!
Keep going with your "loose" technique! Start off with greyscale only, really light values first, and then gradually build up tone.... Only add lines and graphics at the very end, once you've "modeled" the shape completely... Looking forward to seeing more of your work!
I like the color-shift rendering... I would suggest that you try a slightly tipped-up side view before going for the top-front view, so you can definte the styling of the vehicle first, then do a dramatic view.... Really nice "hot spot" on this rendering!
Great work, man. Highly impressive presentation... what program did you use to do the rendering & put it together. Bravo. Btw, Kayusa logo rocks. B
Good to see to see you here! ACCD sketch represent. I heard about your dub from BKV - gold rims?
nice work on the "glam" car - it's hard to create a concavity that big and beautiful in a car - bravo!
WiKID - really appreciate the feedback and I'm certainly honored to hear that the GR-1 crossed your mind when you saw my sketch! I LOVE the vehicle proportion of the Firepower, but have to go with the GR-1 on styling - can't be beaten in my book... Thx. for the wisdom.
thx for the feedback! I'm wondering about the rear fender/body intersection: any thoughts on whether the hard break is good or bad? I'm thinking it might need a smooth transition....
LoL! That's hilarious. Like author, like car: both bottom-feeders at times! More funny cars to come...
I really like the direction your design is taking, and I'm really impressed with your photoshop technique developing so fast. You rock. I did a quick sketchover with a couple suggestions de Benzo.
Great work! Cheers on completing a beautiful model. I nominated your Honda page to the Design Wall, but it's all fantastic.
Definitely not silent in-person - this beast's packing a diesel W-16 powerplant.
Love the thought about the F16 bodyside profile... still the kayusa gets me stoked everytime I see it. Mean!
Your comments are always sharp, man. I've got a lot to learn about vehicle packaging yet, but you know your stuff! You may know my friend Stuart Macey...
I love the way you're "sculpting" the car in shading, rather than simply drawing lines. The Eastern School!
Despited the major visibility problems, the nose of this car just sings to me. If you look on my profile photos, you'll see I'm HUGE fan of wedge-shaped sportscars, particularly Giugiaro's designs from the sexy seventies... So, I think a little refinement may be in order on the hood, but keep that amazing front end! Very Miami, very man-eating shark.
WOW... really cool that you're still working on your entry... Looks like the MIA put on a bit of bling for D. Wade to show off at the club! Love the wheels - they fit the character of the car much better than 5 spokes. In my comment, I was thinking the pipes would stay "in the darkness" of the vents, but these look pretty cool - very unique on a modern car! Not as sure about the pipes on top of the hood... keep developing this design, man!
Dude... nominated the RIF in Gulf colors to the Design Wall, because it's bangin'!
Don't know if you are still looking at this page, but I just wanted to say that your sketches on the "Fever Evolving" page are really good. Bravo. I actually like the "raised" sports car concept better than the SUV-style body you settled on!
Cool... a more aggressive face for Seat. I like the vertical elements in the design - a great touch. They need you in Spain, man.
RAD photoshop technique... great balance between sketch & rendering! Red tires are cool without being silly. I love the front end graphics/surfaces and the front fender shape. Not as sure about the bodyside section... Really nice work.
Thanks man - I always watch out for your design insights. I usually read them and think: "word up, bro". Post up some portfolio work...
I love the idea of a Harley Davidson rumble coming from the MIA, but I gotta vote for MORE power... what about 4 twins to make a V-8? GRRR. If you've got Harley Power, you gotta show some pipes, in the darkness behind those huge vents! (Maybe as a comment on your entry?)
Gotta disagree with jrogers on this one: much more substance in the 118 than the wide-eyed Zonda... amazing performance due to the AMG power, though! Cool surfacing contrasts, but the face....
Great sketches! I agree with Brianm that the engine should be in the front, with the cooling toward the rear, like the p51 inspiration... I also like the wheel openings in the 3/4 sketch more than the side view... but I like the window graphic in the side view more (straighter beltline). How aboug some variations on the front end graphics? Nice sketch!
Dude... Nice lines! Would like to see more quick pen variations...
Dude... Nice lines! Would like to see more quick pen variations...
Whoa! Filski - I also dig the way your window graphic echoes the fender shapes - nice design work, sir.
Really nice sculpting on the fender areas! Not sure if I understand the crease in the shoulder area coming from the a-pillar - is that meant to be a "continuation" like the Z4 or a cutline? Also, the body (door) area between the two prominent horizontal features looks a little flat... have you thought about trying a bit more bulge in there? LOVE the graphic coating of the vehicle!
Nice Lancia! Really hard to find those in the states. I want a Scorpion (Monte Carlo) - they imported them for a few years... Nice work!
Dwayne Wade would roll in this, no doubt. I love the extreme proportions - low, long, and wide with the imposingly HUGE hood... gotta respectfully disagree with braunarsch - love the front engine and huge holes! This reminds me a bit of 1930's designs...
Great photoshop technique! Really cool stance - I love the way it looks like it's jumping off the pavement. Kind of like a....
WOW... really nice page of line sketching. Very nice fluid forms and contour line technique. Little Devils!!! ?? !!
WOW... really nice page of line sketching. Very nice fluid forms and contour line technique. Little Devils!!! ?? !!
Same sketch, with some juicy ad markers. I'll only post it once this time.
Cool combination of muscle and hot-rod inspiration! On your next round, you may want to your door cut lines to show the section of your body shape.
I don't see a Fiero, either... Palethorpe - I think your side view is really cool.. but the bodyside and hood surfaces look a bit flat in your 3/4 views. Maybe some section lines thru there would help to show the form? Reminds me a bit of this:
Love your design, man... here's a sketch on making it a bit more American aerospace-influenced. I made it bigger and added a little bit more of the P51/P82 in there!
Really nice styling including the graphics and surfacing. Bangin' gesture and proportions, good sketch technique. Your rims are a bit too large & typical for a design context, though... I would love to see a some section lines around the body, to analyze the form!
Great concept! I love the engine placement and the color breakup... I can imagine this being a longer vehicle with bigger, off-road wheels. What if you took the styling away from BMW and toward American Aerospace?
Haahaha - VERY COOL. I like the swept-forward a-pillar, skukuzi... brings up some door opening issues, though. Of course, it's all about what the designer wants... what do you think, Marek?
Yo. I nominated your mitsu SUV exterior page to tha Design Wall... I'd love to see more sketches in your portfolio if you got 'em!
sweet shapes with lots of tension and "pull" combined with some nice smooth open areas... very inspiring!
Congrats! Mack rolls over the competition - your entry was awesome! Maybe he'll fly to Miami to pass the torch to your next driver?
As usual, Marek, a bangin' design with lots of gesture and emotion. I love the color, the quick monochromatic technique, the overall proportions... but most of all the way the graphics relate to the forms! Do you think you could pull the windshield glass back to the door/hood cutline for greater visibility? Can't wait to see what rims you'll put on this one... nice work!
hahaha.. good comment skukuzi. Driver might have a bit of an obstructed view. Really cool treatment of the front-rear window transition, Palethorpe... I'd like to see a couple more views of this one!
hahaha! Always get some questions over my "rusty red" color scheme on this one... the reverse side of the vellum shifts yellow to purple for the sun/shadow planes, but it's hard to tell... The coupe would be about f599 proportions, but the cabin is really squashed in this sketch! Thanks for the comments!
Really confident line sketching. I love the early 3-series, back when it was truly a small sport sedan. Word up.
Very cool sketch. I usually like vehicles with a lot of curvature in the bodyside. This one is super flat, but it looks GREAT. Props
Really nice pen sketching... very inspiring. I also like the "extending" body effect in the styling. I like how you added curvature with the power bulge on the front hood.... GRRRRRR.
Nominated your sketch with the blue background... looks quick and fun, with shiny glass. Way to bring back the rear windown slats!
Hadn't checked this one in a while! This car would definitely need scissor doors... Thanks for the comments!
Bottom two are nice & clean. I like vehicles that turn under at the bottom of the body... classic lines. Particularly the bottom left sketch.
Dope line sketch technique - good gesture and stance in your design. A lost art... keep it coming!
Really nice maserati, man. I like the jag as well, but I think the headlight graphics are a bit large for the vehicle & the grille shape could be tweaked. Very, very nice Maserati. Especially LOVE the forward-swept A-pillar.
Video is great!!! Just checked it out and it's stunning... compositing in After Effects or some other? I like the first music a bit more... and congrats on the boat, sir!
I did a quick sketchover... the front fender change lets the window glass open, but may be too much like the Veyron for your or my taste! Let me know what you think... Ben
Dude, how does the side window glass open? Amazing overall execution of the model. I also wonder if the car could use a bit more directionality... many "humps" here...
If you put this design in your portfolio, it is an automatic nomination to the Design Wall! Great feeling for the brand, surfacing, and gesture. Check out Ugo's volkswagen concept in his portfolio for some similar form development in a very different vehicle. SWEET sketch.
Really nice canson-style work. I had to look twice to see whether you used digital or analog tools. Try blues & greens, maybe...
Fun proportions, but perhaps on the unrealistic side! The donked-out wheels are a bit much for the tiny body, but there's definitely some great inspiration here. Maybe some linework-only development before the rendering?
Arif - Welcome to Local Motors! Looking forward to seeing more of your work.... Ben
My friends and I always talk about what the new "classics" will be, when we think back in 10 years or so... cars from the 90's like the sc400, rx7, and... of course the 300zx. Once of the cleanest, purest car designs of the era. I see a very nice similarity with your design, but it's certainly it's own thing!
Dude.. let's see different views on your composition! You've used the same view 6 times, with 1 change in the wheels. Thumb up, but keep sketching!
Cheers to your last comment, Ben-J. Really cool off-center cockpit concept, but it's hard to see what's going on in your major bodyside and hood surfaces, apart from major graphic breaks. Front wheel center section line appears to be pretty flat as it goes over the hood... Would also love to see a wheelbase center section line on the bodyside to check surface on the door area. Really sweet themes in your form language - bravo!
WHOA... slice 'em and dice 'em with this set of blades! The grille reminds me a bit of the Maybach Exelero concept, which is a very good thing. Looks like you shot for "double" feature lines throughout the vehicle and you acheived it. I question the testarossa-style rear fender vent on a front-engined vehicle though. REALLY fun to look at...
Maybe this car, with some development, could be for a NEW vehicle brand? (wink) Good supercar proportions!
WiKID's right about the wheels... COOL "magnification" effect from the middle to outer spokes. I would advise that you could continue your sketch program longer and make further styling developments in 2-d before you begin modeling. Nice overall coupe/GT stance, but the bodyside and top surfaces of the vehicle could all be more "puffed."
I really like that you have a diagonal character line sweep upward through the body of the car! A lot of designers shy away from that because they don't want their car to "sag", then end up with cars that look the same. This has some unique features!
Nice black paint job on this car.... the blue gradation renders it well. Consider the "face" of the car & what expression it makes...
really nice quality of "light" in these illustrations. Very refreshing to see in transportation design work, which is usually so focused on mechanical themes... very unique. I see an attempt to integrate "flower" and "petal" form language into the design... could it be taken further? Could panels "peel" away from one another? Could a function be integrated into "veins" as in leaves? Just random thoughts... Beautiful work!
Nice design! Cool to imagine Enzo cruising in a Hot Rod/F1 Car mix... I think the A-pillar shape could be a bit more elegant (ferrari's always have the most beautiful pillars) and you might want to think about a vent or some more sculpture between the cabin area and the rear fenders (a woman's waist comes to mind)... Also, how did you determine the section on the "nose"?
Very pretty from most angles... Consider adding some kind of visual "structure" to the design, something technical or sharp, in addition to the beautiful organic surfaces. Reminds me of something...
Great work and super-tight presentation- exposed frame concepts are really cool. I love being able to see the "guts" of the vehicle. Would be interested to see a side view and some original sketch development not overlaid from the 3d model. Sweet!
Your design reminded me of the Mercedes Benz Unimog - I put together a few images here:
Jonathan - Count me as a fan of your design. I think the "mountain range" belt line of the vehicle is really unique and contemporary. Usually, I don't like "monobox" forms, but I have to make an exception here - I don't think you need a long, pronounced hood to make this car seem powerful....
Great way to tell the story of the vehicle, and your design process, in your ongoing comments - bravo. I want to hang out with Mack and go off-roading in the PanTerra. Here's a cool solidworks model from ACCD that I thought you and Braunarsch might appreciate:
Good work from an up-and-comer. Try overlaying the Hustle a couple times in a line drawing and throwing some sections over the hood area, to show the surfacing!
