hey thankx nyko, for both feedback and the manikin! well, now that im graduated, im looking for some prospective employment, or if i could get a scholarship for a masters in transport design, i would go for that. i have sent applications for both. im waiting for responses, still gotta send more applications
Braunarsch, this is amazing! The Druck has evolved and matured into something that is so cool, and so fun. What excites me is that I think there could be a market for this-- in the U.S. the only small pickup we have left these days is the Ford Ranger-- and that is 20years old, not safe, and has no modular capabilities. But there is a market for small pickups-- the problem is, is that the only choice people have is to get the ranger, or move up to the Tacoma/ Chevy Colorado-- and these are so ubiquitious-- especially the base versions that just look weird when they have smaller wheels and are lowered.
The Druck has style. It alludes to what the pickup truck was back in the early days in the 20's, and 30's, and yet it is useful (unlike that joke-- the chevy SSR). And now with the interior, and you taking a very clean, and intelligent approach to it-- this is really coming along!
The cutaway is very cool-- it allows me and everyone else to see how the interior fits with the exterior, which is exactly what I wanted-- and it looks like you have respected the packaging very well.
I will be sending you the manikin later today-- I have him fully articulated in my program, but you may have to play with the pivots to make him work for you.
Thank you for sharing this and for the speedy development. What are your plans now that you have graduated?
thanks for the feedback man!
When I saw this yesterday, I nearly jumped out of my seat! This is awesome Braun. Simple, clean, aesthetically pleasing, and looks very buildable. I am really digging it, and it looks like you have done your homework. Do you have a manikin that you can fit int-- no, not the stick dude you used in like checkup 23, but a manikin? I could see if we could get you a solidworks one soon, so you could design around him. But this is awesome. Any way you could maybe turn on like one side and half the windshield, so we could see a cutaway! I love this project sooo much!!!! Cannot wait to see what is next! Keep it up!
A Turbo Diesel in this thing would kick ass. No company has yet to make a durable, tough, cool looking, off-road passenger car in a long
time. Put that new ford 6.7 liter diesel in this thing and it would destroy the competion... or that new mustang 5.0 dam...
oh yea, a little detail about the dashboard design. the dashboard would have a brushed metal look, with a long black glass slit instead of circular dials and displays. instead, the thin screen is big enough to display the speed, rpm, etc in a digital format, thus simplifying the design. centre console is also glass (the black area) which would contain the main status screen which holds info for GPS/SATNAV etc. at the bottom of the console are 4 cupholders and 1 open compartment for things like change, cards, CDs etc. will still be working on the dashboard. feedback would be awesome!
sorry, i meant to do this a couple days ago but i was out of town. in the picture to the right i made a couple of suggestions. the magenta lines propose a new window line, it may not be something to necessarily put in but i just wanted to show how you could use straight lines to compliment the curves and such. as you can see, i threw out a new headlight design because i think they could use some more aggressiveness. I also enlarged the grill, you can tell because the clone stamp doesnt match up lol. the hood also need some lines because right now it just seems to plain, so the green lines are my suggestions for areas of elevation. the inner area could either be depressed or elevated, it just depends on how you feel about it. and lastly, the side vent needs to be redone cause right now it looks cheap and temporary, give it some styling and make it look sexy. hope you consider my suggestions
best of luck in the design process!
I agree with cfromknecht. The beltline needs to drop down. It looks as if bits and pieces of two different SUVs were pulled and put together. It's got a Halo Warthog windshield, Hummer HX rear, and a main body that's a cross between the Hummer H1 and Lambo LM002.
It's definitely got great potential and looks promising. The overall shape and lines need to be more simple and less conflicting.
i feel like the lines on the car are conflicting, if you have sharp and round angles, they need to compliment each other. personally, i think the the car needs a new window line in the mid section that fits with the curves off the flares, i think that would really increase the appeal of the car.
also, increase the size of the grill and headlights so that they look tougher. the rest of the car has a very sturdy, off-road kinda feel and the headlights and grill dont fit that theme
over all, the the car looks great and im interested to see where the design process leads. keep it up!
Also, an idea is to raise and flatten the hood of the car to create more of a right angle. Also, with regards to my previous comment, I now remember that the grille is fake, but even if putting it in a recess lessens the trunk space, I think it's worth it to look cool. Attached is a picture, to show what I mean.
I know I haven't commented on this before, but I looked at all the checkups. I really admire the progress! It's a great idea, and a great design. Right now, my favorite element is the roof and fenders, but I like the front end design from DP 23. Also, on a purely cosmetic note, maybe try making a slight recess for the grille, it will make it look a little more aggressive.
hey nyko i say its time to step the sketchwall up to presentations. simple, maybe only 2 views and drivetrain info, specific functions on the car that make it unique.... all in all its too good to NOT continue... all i gotta do is decide which one i wanna pick from my sketches to develop!!!
I would love to continue this sketchwall! I have learned so much throughout the process, and its been fun too! But many people seem to be at the final stage like you said. Maybe we could continue on to livery design or the final presentation?
To an amazing community of designers, thank you for making this such an amazing SketchWall. Your work is stunning and breathtaking. I am sorry I dropped the ball on keeping it up to date and participating and giving feedback in a timely manner. I followed all of the drawings that came in and was just amazed by the quality of work here.
On My end I had to finish up the How It works Video, which took a lot of my time and thus pulled me away for a bit. I am sorry.
The 24 hours of LeMans is finished, however the next American LeMans Race is in Utah on the 11th. I would like to continue with the next phase in this Sketchwall that of doing marker renderings and sketches. Many of you have already done that, however I wanted to try and do a quick tutorial about rough marker renderings.
So I will give you the choice. I could post a new Sketchwall Subject, or continue with this one. What do you say? What do YOU want? What will make you want to pick those pens, pencils, and styli up? Let me know, and your wish is my command.
Scavenge a pair of red/cyan 3D glasses and take a peek at this render >>
An update on my ideas. I have ditched the front engine layout, as rock 'n' roll as it is, it goes against my sense of logic. Mid mounted is an obvious choice in terms of weight distribution and consequent handling . I have not finalised the design yet, its still coming to me..
no Chalk, no just ran out of time for those calculations. i found out where to insert the formula to automatically create a Cd figure, and was about do it - then time ran out. most of the time was spent preparing the model for flow simualtion, and then generating some basic visual flow sections. it is like biting into an apple, only to have it turn into a puff of air...
yes, you are right regards the coefficient of drag being relative, especially to vehicle speed and frontal area. formula one cars sacrifice low drag resistance for downforce, whereas prius needs efficiency so it does the opposite to a degree. as a rough guess, the B7 could achieve both mainly due to the inline seatin position - which creates a smaller frontal sectional area. the covered wheel arches, and teardrop shaped canopy would reduce drag, but the big rear wing (if angled correctly) would provide downforce. pity i could not prove that with figures for y'all
Filiski in the limited time that you had access to flowworks, were you able to find the vehicles drag force? If so you can easily find your coefficient of drag from there.
Also another thing to note is that you mentioned you wanted to benchmark your coefficient of drag against other cars. That alone may not tell you much. For example a F1 car will have a significantly higher Cd compared to a road going corvette and the F1 car is obviously faster. Then maybe you have a prius with a Cd lower than a corvette (i'm not sure if thats actually true, but lets pretend it is for now) and the corvette is faster than the prius. So my point is if you car ended up having a Cd higher or lower than the corvette or ferrari that alone doesn't tell you much. There would be some other things you need for a better comparison.
@Wazioc- thanks again. I've always wished the racing rules weren't so stifling. I want to see cars changing shape and adapting as they move around the track.
@sixten- hey, thanks Marc! Cool to hear from you. I'm a sucker for Le Mans cars. I'd like to see some more Audi-ness in your roadster- the original R8 prototypes made a real statement: http://www.flickr.com/photos/phenotyp/2637446293/
Heres my LM-LMP1 - inspired by the rally fighter mixed with the mid-90'ies Panos front engine, open top racer ( in my opinion an all american LMP-1 should be front engined and preferably a V8 sticking to tradition ).
Being my first submission, Im really impressed at the skill level in here!
Phenotyp, not sure what you like that I'm doing but find it hard to believe it's my sketches. Really love your air brake system though, it would be amazing to see that added into racing, it would add a whole new dynamic.
Auto-draw, unique idea with the transparent body. Could be feasible in areas but would limit your material options.
Here's a follow-up render to my earlier sketches.
Aurel, thanks for your comment, you're correct, I'm disregarding the conventional petrol/diesel engines in favour of all-electric. No in-wheel motors, just one Motor/Inverter between the rear wheels, one large battery and in-wheel suspension & braking. Also playing with the idea of transparent Butyrate bodypanels, as it would be great for the spectator to be able so see more of the driver working the car. Features like the headlights would also sit beneath the transparent bodywork.
Much of all this obviously makes the concept illegal for today's Le Mans, but for the future, as we will be forced to become less dependant on gasoline, its interesting to see how that may change motorsport.
Great efforts all round, looking forward to seeing more views from the interesting concepts from judgemental541, Julian & phenotyp.
@phenotyp: Wow... impressive design, wonderful, I love it... but you should add some kind of rear wing because I think that your design hasn't enough downforce in the rear ( like the Porsche in the link or the CLK GTR in LeMans '99 )... anyway you could use the airbrake like a wing but you have to increase the size... Anyway great design and idea again

@aurel: diggin your first sketches.
@condormeister: fun first sketch page. your rendered side reminds me of audi's coupes in '99; would be nearly impossible to see enough out of.
@wazioc: thanks! i like what you're doing.
@zhumano: try uploading smaller images-- they're too big to be legible.
^^^WHAAAAATTTT?!!! I've been watching the last 22 hours in french!!!!! i didn't know there was an english version until now. I guess thats what i get for not coming around here.
PS. Nyko and Aurel i'm sorry for your recent loss... maybe next year....
All of the work I am seeing is blowing me away! This is an awesome sketchwall. I had a slight technical setback but will be putting up the next phase to this sketchwall tomorrow.
Right now however, I have one question for all of you.... ARE YOU READY?!
Peugeot has the first four grid spots followed by the 3 audi's for the LMP1 start.... This is going to be an interesting one!
The green flag falls at 3PM CET tomorrow and goes till 3PM on sunday. So get ready!
In the meantime to help you follow the race, get your 2010 spotters guides here: http://www.spotterguides.com/
I will be on here all weekend and will start a 24hrs of Le Mans forum. I'll also open up the LM tinychat over the weekend.
Looking good Sixten. Your prototype design is refreshing with its smooth, flowing surfaces. I especially like the way that line on the rear bumper flows up and over the exhaust. The way the tail lamp is placed in the rear wheel arch also looks great. Can't wait to see more!
Really great work going on here. Aurel- strong front end graphics. Sweet sketches condormeister. Twist79- very clean. I like your outlet shape behind the front wheel. Diggin the dynamism and level of detail Anthony. I'm playing catch up and it's been a while since sketching a car because all I do are childrens products all day, so my proportions are pretty wonky. Here are a couple so far.
@condormeister: Incredible sketches and renderings! It's funny how the side pipe (is that the exhaust?) looks like the RF side vent on the multi-view colored poster! Nice reference! Beautiful crossing of feature lines on your last side view
@benza: I'd love to see more of the bottom left sketch. IMO It has some potential.
@auto-draw: Thanks for the feedback. We'll try to give a better visibility to the SWC section in the future. There is a banner on the studio home page, but it might be too small... Concerning your sketches, great technique. On most of your sketches, I don't see enough room for a conventional engine. Do you think about in-wheel motors?
@Bentley Boy: You always know the good websites. Thank you for sharing.
@Camster: Do you still have issues uploading your images? If it's the case, don't hesitate to ask for help on either Idesigncars' wall or mine.
@Julian: Nice rough
@Judge: Many nice details on your car (curve of the roof, edge on the rear fender,...). It just needs a little effort on the construction aspect and that will be very good.
@twist79: This side view looks nice! Is that an opening behind the front wheel or just a black graphics? In any case, I like the front and middle part of this car. However, the rear looks a bit random. I think that would look much better with a spoiler section that is consistent with the rest of the car.
@lucaswentworth: Front mid-engine rules! Do you know that Panoz will be at LeMans to unveil a car? Unfortunately not in the race this year :-/
@Y-One: It might be the spoiler, but I feel something of the Countach on the rear... I can't wait to see more views!
twist79- I'm seeing some great potential for the middle sketch of your recent post. I like how the windshield wraps around- kind of like a raked-back helmet visor. The front fender piece and the pointed wheel arches also look great. It might be cool to try elongating the wheelbase and lowering the cockpit to give it a more Le Mans prototype feel.
Hi there!!! @Bentley Boy: Thanks for your comment, interesting website
Aurel - that's hot! Condormeister - love the sketches and the presentation layout! BTW, here's a very helpful website for those serious about the technical/aerodynamic aspects of prototype racing cars: http://www.mulsannescorner.com/ Keep up the cool, folks!
First time on here, and it's nice to see so many people with a positive attitude.
Great theme, and good idea to spread the different stages over several weeks.
idesigncars; is there any chance this challenge could have a link somewhere closer to the home page? As a newcomer to this site, I only came across this challenge by chance, and I'm sure a lot more people would be up for the challenge if they knew about it. -just a thought.
Here are my initial scribbles...
Looking forward to seeing everyone's projects progress.
Hi there! Nyko.. Amazing sketchwall! And cool thumbnails!:D @Richard Hsu, millhouse, twist79 Pretty nice start!!! @Aurel. Hot rendering as always!
Millhouse and Richard, great start on the sketching! This is very nice to see. I cant wait to see more development. @ Wazioc, you do too have the skills to do this. This is the sketchwall challenge, a challenge for improvement. I created it a year ago for people like you, who felt they coudn't draw, so that they could have an area on LM where they wouldn't be intimidated by a competition setup, where they felt they always had a second chance, and by simply doing the sketch wall, they were improving their skills. In all honesty, the fact that I have barely sketched in the past several months, you and I are probably on a somewhat even playing field, and I am willing to share my knowledge and time on here to help you get better! Lets see what you can do! Give it a whirl. I know you can do this!
R/Evo, no, that is totally coincidental. I just thought it would be fun to do because Le Mans is around the corner, and it is a great event that I thought could be fun to watch as a community, and have fun with the SketchWall. What other website is it that your talking about? I'd love to learn more. Thanks for letting us know.
I can't wait to see more of these. I haven't been here long enough to follow any sketchwall challenges yet and I'm really looking forward to it. Don't have the skills to play along but I can admire everyone else's work.
Nyko, looking forward to yours because the profiles are so unique
Richard, looking good!
So here are some quick thumbnails I did yesterday when I was trying to work on another project but was in a meeting. I was mainly just exploring some speed forms. I have to be honest, I have not picked up a pen and drawn in several months due to the move, so please excuse my messy sketches. These are thumbnails, and I am going to try to do a series of them this week to find a form I rally like. Right now I really like 5 and 6 on here.
Thank you guys! I am glad it's helpful. I've created this technique some years ago for the Smooth project (http://www.local-motors.com/user_images/pd398.jpg ; http://www.local-motors.com/user_images/pd397.jpg) because I didn't have enough time to draw nice rims on each rendering. It saves a lot of time when you have to do many views of the same car from different angles. I've enclosed a new rim I made today that you can add to the list. Don't hesitate to send your own rim designs... If I get enough of them I'll create an updated library
Could definitely see this as a new Hummer design. My biggest problem with hummers is the squinty windows. I know when I'm out driving around I like seeing what is going on around me, especially when out on the trail. It's nice to be able to lean out the window and see how close you are to big obstacles, but doesn't look like you could do much with those windows.
I really love the design other than the small windows. I'll even back you on your headlight decision. Looks mean, aggressive, and new. Probably easier to manufacture as well. Looks great, keep up the good work.
LucSimard ----i would love to get my hands on software that could generate a coefficient of drag and so forth. any suggestions ? solidworks premium has only floxpress built into it, which is a very basic limited version of the full flow simulation add-in...that costs as much as the solidworks itself!
I went through pretty much all the checkup and design process and this is it! I would not touch it further.
PS I like the nose, it is special and it give a lot of distinctive character!!!
It has been years since I am brewing for an aerodynamically super efficient car closer to and aircraft shape and aerodynamic performance without the ugly 2 front and 1 back wheel ... and this IS REALLY IT
I would be very interested to see some aerodynamic numbers ?
I am all for a BUILD !!!
Thx filski, yes ill do the same treatment on the rear, to see how it will work. Glad to hear your take @chappy. Nice take on the new borg warner SST. For the styling suggestion, i do think it would take a turn to hummer and jeep. Their styling cues are strong and are so easy to fall into. Thx again
hey me2, as far as that turbo, i would go with the new borg warner SST (single Sequential turbo) it uses two compressor wheels in a single housing, one inducer and two exducers.and i belive it uses VGT as well, so you get the air of a dual turbo setup in the size of a single turbo, the thing is the size, it was designed for the new 6.7 scorpion powerstroke in the 2011 superduty's so i dont know if the 3.0 would have enough to spin it. would be interesting to try though. also as far as that front bumper, what if you carried filski's idea around the fogs (as stated) and then follow the line on your front skid plate and bring it all the way to the other side so it is one piece? or do you think that would look to hummer/jeepish?
awesome, thanks everyone. i third that build notion !
so...Grouch Marx, a quick google image search has brought fruitful results, and a better understanding of the nose 'on the nose'. hmm see what i can do. there was a small winglet and indicator nose idea i posted on an earlier checkup, somewhere back in history - perhaps i coulod revisit that and hope it will take the marx effect off a little for you.
sorry to hear about the schitzo attack eli. hope its under control now. i may just leave the design as is then...
No shortage of fun here! Nice work filski. It posesses just enough military essence without being too literal. From the precise lighting to the choice of color & trim, this is really great work. My only reservations lie in the form of the nose. While clearly inspired by aeronautic icons, its voluminous surfaces and profile conjures up images of Grouch Marx (I know, it sounds like a kindergarten critique, but is the most efficient characterization of my personal reaction). Your fenders posess strong, stealth jet-like "bonelines" and an economy in surface volumes which the nose seems to lack. Perhaps the nose could benefit from similar vocabulary so as to harmonize? Just my two cents for what it's worth. And there is no discounting the enormous effort you put forward, and I agree with others here that LM should build this, or something of this vehicle type. It seems like a natural choice after covering the offroad-capable polar opposite, as demonstrated by the RF.
