The Rally Fighter, designed by community member Sangho Kim is currently in open prototyping process. YOU are invited to participate.
Check this space for Rally Fighter updates in both design and engineering. We want to hear your thoughts, criticisms and input.
In the end, the Rally Fighter will be the result of Local Motors Community collaboration and will be one of the hottest vehicles to hit the dirt or the pavement.
Designed for the American Southwest, the Rally Fighter is a purpose-built Rally Racer with on-road chops. It has dual ride height capability, 18 inches of wheel travel, and a kickin, clean diesel engine.
The location of the first Local Motors Micro-Factory, and the home of the Rally Fighter, will be announced soon.

wow
wow cool! could you guys post a video when the fibreglass is being milled into shape? i would love to see how the process works!
we will certainly post a video. Many of them. In actuality the fiberglass is not milled into shape. This above is the base of a structure that will be stiffened with glass but overlaid with a millable (NON-fiber based paste). That paste is what will be milled. Then that will be finished into a class-A (a term that is too broadly used these days) surface. All of that can be considered a "pattern". Then a production mold will be made of that pattern. From that Mold we will make body parts out of glass, carbon, and other appropriate materials. Not all parts on the RF body will be made through this methodology, but I hope this gives a good description.
oooh i c! i still am not fully clear on it, perhaps a visual aid would be able to fully explain the process! will be waiting for the video!
So it's just about ready for being a larger clay form, right? Similar to what Five-Axis does?
wow this is some pretty detailed woodwork. Is this your style of build or is it common?

very cool, ah This is gonna be off the chain, once finished!
Wow, this process is incredible.
Why is it so high up? Is that just to make it easier to work on? |
Hey look! White-space in comments! Gread job TThomas!
Its been a while since i last checked the build. Wooow, soo beautiful the RF will be. LM the place where automotive dreams come true
That's gonna be a lot of molding work.. carbon-fibre or otherwise. I think this is gonna pull a lot of attention at SEMA, if that is where you're unveiling it..
LOOKIN GREAT GUYS!!!!! CAN'T WAIT TO SEE MORE PICTURES!
Suz, you guys will see it here first. We are going to introduce it at SEMA. Do you feel like making a road trip?
Its looking good. The light bar idea will look good on it. I can't wait to see it "in the flesh". So why such a big step-over on the milling? The hand work will be pretty expensive also, and keeping precision on the door cuts will be tough. Well you guys are awesome for getting so much done in so little time. You must have a great team.
Tym, can't wait for you to see it in the flesh, will you be at SEMA? dasbeev.....getting excited?

its getting exciting, can't wait to see more

sweeet! btw, is this gonna be at SEMA?
just
This is getting quite interesting; are they doing the rear bumper in the background of the bottom pic?
wow looks awesome!
Amazing!
i cant imagine how this the molding works...
or its just inner piece and then fiber will be shaped over and pressed by outer mold. |
the shapes is really coming through, gonna be a hot car. Kick A$$
MBW17 - I assume you mean the car and not the patterns/molds when you ask if "it" will be at SEMA...the answer is yes, the car will be at SEMA. Suzq044 - Yes, that is a pattern for both sides of the rear bumper. Buryat - what you're seeing are the master patterns or "plugs" (the male part in the molding process) from which the molds (the female part) are made. What this means is that the mold for the center section for example will be made by laying fiberglass over the plug in the picture, some structure added to it, pulled away from the plug and set upside down, and that's how the center section body panel will be made.
Looking good guys! Very exciting stuff!
MBW17 thanks for explanation.

Very exciting! It's looking awesome! Cannot wait to see the final product!
oh my...congratulations....need more...feed us
NICE - keep watching this space. The Rally Fighter will be whole before you know it!! Congratulations, all
Yes, I think I will be at SEMA. I'll definitely swing by. It looks like you are getting really a good tight fit on all the parts you've put on. Kudos! That's very hard to do.
Ahh, sweet!!!
It looks brilliant...might I suggest a Balck color too...I think it looks slick in Black. Can't wait to see hoe the rest of the parts tun out, and most of all I cant wait to see the Interior parts |
wowie! thats wonderful!
It's like watching a baby growing in the womb...yes, that's a creepy thought literally, but c'mon the RF is like our LM baby...so...just about time to crack open those boxes of cigars folks!
So is that how low it'll be able to go? (just kidding, even though it looks cool that low too). Can't wait to see it.
tasty.
interesting, what the thickness of material and what its weight? |
It's going to be carbon fiber iirc.
wow! Cant wait to see it on the roads....
nice...The body is great! Its the tail lights and the headlights that i don't like. Taillights resemble so much of the new civic coupes. Headlights are boring looking it doesn't go well with that sexy body.
The tail lights are from the Honda Civic...
why does it have to be a honda civic taillight? I hope that they decide to change the taillights. IF that thing comes out w/ civic taillights Hondas gonna have a fit. So if you want i have some taillights designs.
Its not like that, they could easily make a original design on the tailights, there was actually a discussion about this some months ago, but the thing is that making a original stop light design requires a lot of work, time, and also a lot of money to invest, and like jay said they provide the design of the car everything else comes from various manufacturers, lights, wheels, motor, transimsion, suspension, steering column...etc.Mostly because the maintenance costs are more reasonable this way for the client, if for instance something happens with one of these components it could easily be replaced. The car needs to be serviceable and affordable if it will sell, otherwise you would pay a lot more for one of these cars, and if something happend to one of these componenst it would take a lot longer to replace and it would cost more, wich is not efficient.
original parts would make it exciting and more intriguing to future customers out there. By providing a really cool body and tail lamps and head lamps from other cars is insane...Its like a frankenstein mobile. Ya feel me? What about the copyrights from other makers and such? how is that goin to affect the company as a whole? what would the world think?
might as well throw on the BMW 6series tail lamps at least those are unique.
If I am coming across like a jerk I am sorry...its just that I am a very passionate aspiring car designer and I would just hate to see this beautiful machine go down for tail lights from critics around the world. I love cars and i love this design, its the tail lights thats tearing me apart.
Haleewood: Sorry you feel that way, but this decision was made a long time ago. The cost to have a new set of lights tested and DOT approved is financially prohibitive, running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Therefore, an already available set of lights had to be chosen and the design created with them in mind. Changing the lights now would mean re-designing the entire rear of the car to accomodate.
Well...since the decisions already been made good luck. Since local motors are using other makers parts...Should they change the design competition and make it to where we would be designing our unique car bodies with other manufacturers parts ie: headlights, tailights, etc...? It would make sense right?

IT FITS!!!! IT FITS!!!! Today is a day to celebrate!!! Congrats guys for your hard work and the community all!! :D:D:D:D
Pff congrats you guys, its good news to see that the mariage between the body and the chasis is a success. Always trust CAD designers

LM stands as the undisputed heavyweight champion of Auto Open Source World. The RF is a classic in my books. I would love to own one. Congratulations LM

I want to point out that Colby is grinning like he did something bad, and Mike is mean-mugging (again).
